Ocean-bound plastic refers to mismanaged plastic waste that is at significant risk of entering the ocean. Mismanaged means that it is not properly disposed of and thus polluting the environment. Ocean-bound plastic includes any mismanaged waste collected on land, beaches or waterways within 50 km of a coast. This term is in accordance with commonly accepted definitions established by researcher Jenna R. Jambeck et.al. who did a comprehensive study of the origins of ocean plastic. Once plastic is in the ocean it is already too late. We share Oceanworks vision of turning off the tap on ocean plastic before it enters the ocean and that is why we selected ocean-bound plastic for this initiative.
